Dave Isay: Everyone around you has a story the world needs to hear

21:38 minutes · TED2015

Dave Isay opened the first StoryCorps booth in New York’s Grand Central Terminal in 2003 with the intention of creating a quiet place where a person could honor someone who mattered to them by listening to their story. Since then, StoryCorps has evolved into the single largest collection of human voices ever recorded. His TED Prize wish: to grow this digital archive of the collective wisdom of humanity. Hear his vision to take StoryCorps global — and how you can be a part of it by interviewing someone with the StoryCorps app.

A note from TED's curator, Chris Anderson

Dear TED subscriber,

Hi there, and thanks for being a subscriber to this newsletter. I wanted to let you know personally of one very special highlight of the TED2015 conference we just held: today's powerful talk, presented by this year's TED Prize winner Dave Isay of StoryCorps. He had a massive impact at the conference, and I'd love to give you a chance to hear his talk and participate in the wish he sets out at the end of it.

It's an extraordinary wish. StoryCorps collects powerful, intimate conversations between two people who care about each other. One will ask the other questions about what matters to them most in life. The recordings are amazingly revealing and moving and have captivated radio listeners for years. But now Dave wants to open this process to the world. He has used part of the $1 million TED Prize funding to build an incredibly cool app that allows anyone to record such an interview ... and then upload it to the U.S. Library of Congress' American Folklife Center. Here's one of the many media stories describing it in more detail.

As Dave said in his talk. We have a chance here to learn to listen to each other in a whole new way. And to create an archive of the collective wisdom of humanity. The essence of the TED Prize is that it should inspire action. There are two simple things I'd love you to consider doing:

  • Share the talk. You can use the 'Track your Influence' feature on the talk page to generate a custom url that will count how many people you bring to this wish.
  • Download the app. And invite a loved one or friend to record a story.
Thanks so much for your interest in TED,

Chris Anderson
