So, What is a Brochure, Anyway?  
Derived from the French brocher meaning to stitch (as in several sheets stitched together), today a brochure is just as likely to simply be a single sheet folded two or three times. In addition to a definition this article has some design tips too.

Folding a Brochure Can Be a Little Tricky  
There are many ways to fold a brochure, including the ever-popular tri-fold. And you need to use a little bit of math when you do fold them so that the panels all lay flat and nest properly. For tri-fold, 8 panel parallel and double fold parallel, and gatefold brochures here are the numbers for the sizes of panels when you're doing letter, legal, or tabloid paper sizes so that your brochure folds correctly.
