The spell of pleasant days in autumn known as Indian Summer in North America is associated with another group in Europe: old women.
Could it be a second spring late in life and year? Or something that drove old women to the woods and streets in autumn -- some mushrooms perhaps?
Nobody knows what old wives' summer has to do with old wives because, of course, they have nothing to do with it. In Old German, a word for spider's silk was similar (but not related) to a word for women.
Young sheet-weaver spiders can be seen hanging on their silk, gliding through the air in great numbers through autumn (compare gossamer — "goose summer"). Unfortunately, we can't see the spiders in this email stationery, but the scene is still full of fall splendor:
