What Your Smartphone Can Teach You About Desktop Publishing | Until recently about the only thing I did with my phone home screen was put apps into folders and change the wallpaper now and then. But the other night (and I mean all night!) I started exploring the world of launcher apps for my Android phone. As I'm writing this my screens still look like the images you'll see in this week's article on grids and smartphones. No guarantees it won't change by the time you read this though. There's always one more look to try. So many icons and so little time. I experience something similar every time I go to do any kind of page layout. So many options. Where to begin. Where to end.
Lessons in Layout From Your Smartphone | Even if you don't know the difference between PowerPoint and Photoshop, you can learn some of the basics of page layout just by playing with your phone. And no, I'm not talking about watching YouTube videos or even browsing my site from your phone (although I certainly won't discourage that!). Put your finger on an app icon on your home screen and move it around. That's the first step in learning about grids and the principles of design using nothing but your phone. It's also helps if you have a newer Android phone that lets you use all kinds of fancy launcher apps... but even iPhones and Windows phones can get in on the act.
Why You Should Use a Grid | Speaking of grids... I've updated this article a bit. It's an introduction to why and where to use grids in desktop publishing.
Classic Ad Design | I've updated the graphics in this article (that's my dad and little brother). The technique might be old but it's just as relevant today. If you want to design a successful ad but don't know where to start. Try an Ogilvy. It may work for you or give you a jumping off point to other good ad design options.
